A band have credited a Ukrainian man and a viral social media investigation for their reformation.

The defended – which consists of David McCallum (Lead vocals/guitar) and Stephen Dempster (Bass) who hail from Glasgow as well as Scott Chalmers (Lead guitar/vocals) from Perth – originally formed in 2006 after meeting at college.

Despite releasing a few tunes and playing venues like Cathouse in Glasgow, The Cavern Club in Liverpool and The Doghouse in Dundee, the group never quite took off and soon disbanded in 2010.

But now, more than a decade on, the group is back together and it’s all, strangely, thanks to fans in Ukraine.

David McAllum, 37, explained: “A song that we released in 2008, Man on a Hill (There's a Man) – which we wrote in Scott’s parent’s home - ended up on Ukrainian radio and we have no idea how.

“Arthur Bogushev, a Ukrainian man heard the song on the radio, recorded it and put it on Soundcloud in 2015 because he was trying to track down the song and band.

“Arthur then went on this seven-year social media search to find out and before long, a Reddit page was set up, details were published on a ‘lost media’ website, and someone had even done a YouTube video trying to track down this ‘forgotten’ tune.”

After someone cracked the code and found the band, the group noticed that a video of them playing the song live at the city’s Box, had gone from 100 views to over 10,000 almost overnight.

“It was like we woke up one day and everyone on the internet knew who we were. It’s crazy,” David said.

He continued: “Someone had basically found a video of us singing the tune at Box and then they discovered our archived Myspace page.

“They found Scott and e-mailed him to say that there was this big online search for our band.

“Scott sent it to me, and I thought it was a prank, we had no idea at all.

“We realised then that millions of people were searching for us.”

David added that since the find, the band has managed to track down Arthur.

He said: “We were able to find Arthur on Instagram and say thank you to him. He is such a big part of our story now.”

Thanks to Arthur and the incredible discovery, the band now has over 3,000 subscribers on YouTube and almost 10,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.

They have also started making music again, having released their first single in over 10 years just a few weeks ago.

The new tune, Back For More, was accompanied by a music video shot around Glasgow and it has already received over 18,000 views on YouTube.

David went on to say that the group is currently in the studio working on some new music, and will be releasing dates for shows in the city and beyond soon.
