Asda has become the first UK supermarket to sell refurbished TVs in its branches offering cost-cutting alternatives for Glaswegians.

The supermarket announced the initiative will be available at six of its branches including Folkestone, Leeds, Glasgow, Sunderland and Ellesmere Port.

Three models of returned HD LED Smart Sharp and Polaroid TVs, refurbished using recycled materials at Asda’s electrical returns centre (ERC), are available to purchase, for as little as £100.

The 32", 40" and 50" TVs all include clearly marked energy ratings, barcodes and images indicating the items are refurbished.

The move is part of Asda’s commitment to supporting the circular economy, responding to a trend where customers are prioritising saving over spending.

Asda's income tracker reported that despite household weekly income reaching its highest point since March 2024, at £245 in July, UK households are focusing on saving.

The recommended retail price for a new HD LED 50" Smart Polaroid TV is £240, but opting for a refurbished model will reduce the price to £160, a saving of £80.

Lisa Lennon, vice president of general merchandise at Asda, said: “At Asda we’re committed to doing the right thing for customers and communities.

"Increasing the longevity of our products and supporting the circular economy has its clear environmental benefits and can also be a way for us to provide more affordable options to more of our customers.

“The trial is already proving very popular stores where it has launched and marks an excitement moment for us as we continue look at new ways we can further reduce our carbon footprint, and support customers where budgets may be stretched.”
