A former Glasgow nightclub will be substantially demolished to make way for nearly 200 student flats.

A planning application to transform the Archaos site at 21-41 Queen Street has been approved by council officials.

Plans outline that the existing structure will be pulled down with only the facade remaining and a 14-storey building will be constructed behind it.

It will be home to a 197-bed student accommodation block with associated facilities and a retail unit on the ground floor.

The development will be carried out by Carrick Properties and CAQN Ltd.

The new complex will include studios and cluster flats, which seek to "erase the current student housing shortage".

It will be a car-free development with cycle storage.

Operator Novel Student promises "modern, high-quality student living". The firm has existing blocks across the UK, including on Cathedral Street in Glasgow and in Edinburgh.

Documents detail that the exterior of the building will remain true to the heritage of Merchant City and create "vibrant and populated social spaces".

The planned commercial unit is intended to remain Tam Shepherd’s Trick Shop, the existing retailer at 33 Queen Street.
