A gas company is set to begin the work of a major project in East Kilbride.

SGN has said they are investing around £72,000 to ensure the centre of the town 'continues to receive a safe and reliable gas supply'.

During the works in the Main Street area, the company will replace existing metal gas mains and services with modern plastic pipes.

They say the 'essential works' form part of an ongoing mains replacement programme developed with the Health and Safety Executive.

The huge project - which will be carried out in three phases - is set to begin on Monday, September 16 and last until the end of November.

The gas company has revealed during each stage temporary traffic lights will be in place, however, they will be manually controlled at peak times to minimise disruption.

Phase one of the work will begin on Monday, September 16 and end on Monday, September 30.

During this stage, the firm will be working on Main Street at its junction with Old Mill Road, with two-way temporary traffic lights in place.

SGN said: "We’ll be using a technique involving inserting the new plastic pipe inside the old main, reducing the need to dig lengthy trenches."

Meanwhile, phase two of the work will start on Tuesday, October 1. During it, the gas company will work on Main Street between its junctions with Old Coach Road and Old Mill Road.

Two-way traffic lights will also be in place during the second stage of the works.

A spokesperson for the firm said: "We’ll pause this phase on Friday, October 11 to allow Scottish Power Energy Networks (SPEN) to carry out works at East Kilbride railway station.

"Once SPEN has completed its works we will carry on with phase two, aiming to complete it by the end of October. "

Following that, phase three of the work will start on Friday, November 1, at the junctions of Main Street, Old Coach Road, Markethill Road, and Parkhall Street.

However, at this point, four-way temporary traffic lights will be in place in the area.

The final phase will be completed by the end of November.

An SGN spokesperson added: "All businesses in the area will be open as normal during our work and access for residents will be maintained throughout the project.

"We understand roadworks can be frustrating.

"However, the new plastic pipe has a lifespan of 80 years.

"This means that once our work is done, residents and businesses will be able to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable supply of gas for many years to come."
