A spokesperson said: "We had an unexpected and delightful visitor at the Hielan Jessie! None other than the talented actor James McAvoy dropped in for a pint.

"His presence brought an electrifying buzz to the cozy pub.

"You may recognise the star from his roles in "X-Men" and "Atonement." From the whole team it was lovely meeting you!"

McAvoy is starring in a new horror film, Speak No Evil, which was released in cinemas last week.

It follows the story of two families who meet up after becoming friends on holiday, but things take a rather eerie and sinister turn.

The Gallowgate pub dates back to 1771 when the tenement it is located in was built, opposite the barracks of the 17th Highland Regiment.

The name Hielan Jessie was inspired by a woman, Jessie Brown, whose husband, Sergeant Brown, was in the regiment.

While fighting in India during the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, the regiment became trapped in their fort and Sergeant Brown was killed.

Over battle cries and noises of war, Jessie heard the sound of bagpipes, a signal that another Scottish regiment was close.

She urged her husband’s men to carry on, and they were saved by the other regiment. Her bravery has led to her name being immortalised in the pub.

The pub spent 37 years in the same family before Billy Gold sold it last year.

Punters love it for its traditional features in modern times such as no television or loud music and reasonably priced drinks.
