Tributes have been paid to a Glasgow councillor who has died after an illness.

SNP Councillor Kenny McLean was elected in the Partick ward in 2007 and represented Kelvindale and Partick East in the city, where he lived for most of his life.

He was also the City Convenor for Neighbourhoods, Housing and Public Realm.

The Glasgow SNP group announced his death on Wednesday evening in a touching tribute.

A spokesperson said: "We are devastated to share the news that our dear friend and colleague Cllr Kenny McLean has died after an illness which he bore with his usual cheerfulness. Kenny was an SNP Glasgow councillor since 2007 and a tireless campaigner for Scotland and social justice.

"Kenny was a passionate supporter of Scottish independence, community-led housing associations, his ward Partick, his constituents and St Mirren.

"He was no-nonsense, pragmatic, funny, kind and had absolute integrity. A friend to so many and he’ll be missed more than he’d ever have known."

More tributes soon flooded in for the councillor, including Labour MSP Paul Sweeney who said: "I'm very sorry to hear of Councillor McLean's passing. I remember him well from the @GetGlesgaMoving campaign hustings in 2017, where he spoke passionately about improving the city's public transport. It's an ambition we will all continue to work to realise. May he rest in peace."

Stuart McMillian MSP wrote: "I am so sorry to read this. Kenny was such a great person, and I will remember him smiling and laughing and being positive. RIP Kenny."

Scottish Greens councillor for Pollokshields Jon Molyneux added: "I'm so sorry to hear this. What a big and sad loss. My thoughts are with Kenny's friends and family and of course with all the SNP group."

Scottish Conservatives councillor for Shettleston Thomas Kerr wrote: "I am so sorry to hear of Kenny's passing - he was a devoted local Councillor who was always cheerful and passionate. Thinking of the entire SNP Group and his family."
