A MAN drove through a red light almost colliding with a truck while trying to get away from police.

Kenneth McKenzie was spotted by cops in a grey Ford Ranger on Avenue End Road in the northeast of Glasgow.

Officers signalled him to stop but he continued driving.

McKenzie finally stopped after the police vehicle's emergency lights were switched on.

But as cops exited the car to speak with him, he sped away.

He drove east on Cumbernauld Road and turned to Lenzie Road as officers followed. His manner of driving was dangerous.

McKenzie arrived at road works with a temporary traffic light, which was red.

People were working in the area and people were waiting for the light to change.

The 30-year-old went through the red light and turned left to the B757.

Again, there were road works in the area and the traffic light was red.

McKenzie turned left onto Langmuirhead Road.

The driver of a truck travelling towards the same junction was forced to stop to avoid a collision with McKenzie's vehicle.

Police continued to pursue but lost sight of the car, so they asked for additional assistance.

After a search, they found out who the Ford was registered to and called the man.

On the phone, the man said: “It was my pal Kenneth McKenzie from Lennoxtown. He phoned me and said something bad happened”.

Cops went to his address and arrested him.

McKenzie appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court this week after he pleaded guilty to the offences.

Sheriff Mark Maguire told his lawyer: "Your client has 18 offences, this is his second dangerous driving. He is on community payback orders.

"The threshold for custody has been met."

The solicitor argued: "Yes, but I am hoping to persuade you otherwise."

The sheriff remarked: "I should lock him up but I take into account what you have said."

McKenzie was tagged for 328 days, forcing him to stay at his home between 7pm and 7am each day.

He was disqualified from driving for 54 months.

The sheriff told McKenzie: "In one view, I should be locking you up right now.

"You are somebody who clearly is a danger to the public. But I have to take into consideration if I can do anything else.

"If you breach this in any way, I will not blink to send you to jail. Do not think at all that you can sit behind the wheel for 54 months."
