The first phase of major footbridge repair works on Glasgow's M8 has been completed.

On behalf of Transport Scotland, Amey is undertaking essential refurbishments of the Cornwall Street and Kirkwood Street footbridges that span the motorway between Junction 21 (Scotland Street) and Junction 23 (Dumbreck).

The road firm has said the initial phase of the project to maintain these 50-year-old structures has now been completed.

It involved two consecutive weekend closures of 16 lanes of Scotland’s busiest motorway to remove five suspended spans from the bridges for refurbishment off-site.

Upon the removal of the spans, four weeks of concrete repairs, inspections and on-site testing were undertaken.

Now, a further 14 weeks of structural investigation, laboratory testing, and analysis are underway, which will be followed by off-site refurbishment of the suspended spans.

However, Amey will 'stand down' the site on Friday, October 18 until Spring 2025 when the next phase of the works will commence.

The next phase will see the suspended spans repaired, strengthened, and reinstalled.

Signed pedestrian diversions will remain in place during this period.
