New student flats are planned as part of the redevelopment of the University of Glasgow’s western campus.

A scheme submitted to Glasgow City Council reveals 460 student bedrooms would be created — and a 1990s extension to the B-listed Anderson College would be knocked down.

Plans state the project at the corner of Church Street and Dumbarton Road will “deliver the university’s first purpose-built student residences for over 20 years at the heart of the city’s West End”.

Planning permission in principle for the wider former Western Infirmary site was granted in 2017, establishing consent for the development of student accommodation.

Now, 460 student bedrooms have been proposed which the application claims will “provide a high-quality addition to the University of Glasgow’s existing residential portfolio”.

It adds: “This will provide students with a first-class residential facility at the heart of the western campus within easy access to a range of facilities around the site.

“In addition, the application incorporates proposals for the partial demolition and redevelopment of Anderson College enabling the building to fully integrate with the proposals.”

The college would be retained as a “learning and teaching space for the University of Glasgow”.

The demolition of the modern extension will allow for a “new extension to the rear of the building which will partly contain the proposed courtyard which forms part of the proposed student accommodation”.

Currently, Anderson College is home to the Glasgow International College which offers degree preparation courses for international students.

The plans state the “primary goal is to offer students high-quality, close-to-campus accommodation that meets the needs of our growing academic community”.

“This development will provide easy access to academic and extracurricular facilities, reducing commuting time and expense. This will improve their work-study-life balance, affordability, and strengthen the on-campus community and connections.”

The application continues: “Building on a decade of investing in new facilities and creating a cohesive urban environment in the heart of the West End, the University of Glasgow is committed to further enhancing the student experience through the built environment.”
