A community cinema says they are gobsmacked and ecstatic after receiving ‘life-saving’ funding.

Kirky Cinema, based in Kirkintilloch Town Hall, recently received £10,366 from the National Lottery Awards for All Scotland fund – which they say will help keep the lights on and the doors open for the next two years.

Serina Marshall, manager of Kirky Cinema, told the Glasgow Times: “The funding will cover expenses for us to run the cinema, undisturbed, for two years.

“The funding will give us two years to re-build the cinema and it hopefully means we can gradually apply for less funding and become a more sustainable model which runs itself.”

“We were absolutely gobsmacked and ecstatic when we got the news that we had received the funding,” she said.

She added: “It was pretty emotional.”

The mobile cinema shows a range of films from Disney (PG) to Barbie (12A) at a reduced price of £5 for adults and £3 for kids. Snacks are also available to purchase at a lower-than-average price.

Screenings are open to all members of the public, with dementia-friendly and baby-friendly events available too. During these screenings, Kirky Cinema allow for the lights to be on, and attendees are allowed to talk and even dance.

“The dementia-friendly screenings are emotional, but we make sure we are giving them the best experience,” Serina explained.

She continued: “Meeting residents in the care homes is amazing for us. They are all lovely.

“One of our volunteers actually ended up working with us after she brought her mum to one of our dementia-friendly screenings and it brought back so much nostalgia for her mum.”

In the wake of receiving the funding grant, Serina said she would encourage any community organisation or charity to apply.

She added: “We’re new to applying for the funding, so it was a total learning curve for us.

“But I would highly recommend people apply for funding because it’s been a lifesaver for us and it will be for a few years.”
