Concerns that a Southside property which has been empty for almost 10 years is still not on the market has been raised by a Labour councillor.

During Wednesday’s finance and audit scrutiny committee meeting questions were raised by councillor Jill Brown over the future of 33 Riverford Street in Shawlands and if the local council had any plans to put it on the market.

It comes after questions were raised about four empty commercial units on Byres Road, Dumbarton Road, Great Western Road and Riverford Road – three of which are currently on the market.

Councillor Brown said: “There is reference to one of the properties at Riverford Road having been vacant since 2015 but it is not on the market to be let.

“In the context of the discussion we were having at the last meeting, it would be helpful to understand why that length of time has passed and it is not on the market plans timetable.

“Given that it has been vacant for more than nine years, there doesn’t seem to be a sense of urgency which is my concern.”

A council officer responded: “With regard to Riverford Road, my recollection is that in the report at the last meeting that property was now due for marketing, however I will come back and confirm that and also get information on why it was vacant for so long.

“My understanding is that it is now due to go to the market.”
