Councillors have voted to refuse planning permission for a house to be built on land in Bishopbriggs.

East Dunbartonshire Council’s planning committee considered an application which proposed the subdivision of a plot of land in Belvidere Crescent in order to allow the construction of a new detached property in the form of a three-bedroomed house.

The council received six letters of objection and one neutral comment in relation to this application. Many complaints focused on issues with traffic and parking, with others highlighting concerns about construction noise, the proposed dwelling being out of character for the area, and loss of light for residents of nearby Benvie Gardens.

Despite this, the council’s planning officers recommended granting the application subject to a list of conditions. The road traffic service had not objected to the proposals, saying they were satisfied with the planned parking arrangements.

During the meeting, Councillor Lynda Williamson (SNP, Bishopbriggs North and Campsie) moved an amendment to refuse the application, on the grounds that the layout and parking provision was not considered to be reflective of the established character within the immediate surroundings of the application site and was therefore contrary to local planning policies.

This was seconded by fellow SNP councillor Paul Ferretti, who serves the same ward as Councillor Williamson, and the resultant vote ended seven to four in favour of the amendment to refuse planning permission.
