A new speed camera has been installed on a Glasgow road following complaints from residents.

The camera is fixed on South Street which covers the city's Scotstoun and Whiteinch areas and will enforce the 30mph limit.

It comes after police received requests for more enforcement in the area due to excessive speeding, with locals describing the road as a 'race track'.

Statistics also show that 12 injury collisions took place at the location over four years and speed surveys confirm that 66% of vehicles that use the road travel above the speed limit.

Police Scotland worked with the Safety Camera Unit and Glasgow City Council to review the area and concluded that the best idea would be to introduce a speed camera.

They decided that having mobile enforcement in the area would be difficult due to the volume of traffic and type of parked vehicles along the road.

The camera on South Street, at its junction with Balmoral Street, will assist in reducing speeds and improving road safety for the local community.

Since the force's initial review, there have been 10 more crashes on South Street including a fatal collision caused by speeding.

We previously reported that there was a serious crash in March of this year involving a white Mercedes C43, a blue Vauxhall Corsa, a black Nissan Juke and several parked cars.

The Mercedes driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the Nissan was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

Alan Bowater, West Safety Camera's area manager, said: "We will continue to work within Police Scotland to identify areas where speeding has contributed to injuries and deaths on the roads.

"The fixed camera enforcement will assist in improving driver behaviour on South Street and support local policing in making this area safer for all road users."
