A councillor slammed Glasgow’s public transport as “unaffordable” for people on low incomes and branded it unreliable with services running late too often.

Councillor Saqib Ahmed is bringing a motion to a council meeting this week, which claims some parts of the city lack access to enough transport services and points to the fact that a Glasgow bus day ticket costs more than £5.

Councillor Ahmed said: “We are one of the largest local authorities in the UK but unfortunately our transport system is one of the worst in the UK.”

He will call for more reliable buses running on time for workers and says when women are working late, dependable services are even more important.

The motion from the Labour councillor states that  “many communities across the city lack appropriate transport links, leaving public transport inadequate for many”, and that the “affordability of transport remains a significant barrier, especially for low-income residents”.

It reads: “The decision by the Scottish Government to scrap the planned reduction in train fares exacerbates this issue, illustrating a lack of cohesion in transport policy at the national level.”

The Greater Pollok politician’s motion adds that “accessibility for disabled residents, particularly blind and partially sighted people, must be a priority in any transport improvements”.

Among a number of actions, it demands the reintroduction of reduced train fares during peak hours and calls for a review of transport affordability across all modes of travel.

The city councillor also wants public transport operators to have performance targets with penalties for constant delays or cancellations.

Another proposal calls for the council to “explore local solutions, including partnerships with private operators, to expand bus services in underserved areas while larger infrastructure projects are underway”.

Concerns will also be expressed about delays to the major future Clyde Metro transport overhaul coming to the city.

The motion calls for an acceleration of the Metro project with clear timelines and for the maintenance and cleaning of cycle lanes to be improved.

The motion will be presented to the full council meeting on Thursday.
