A drunk businessman who brutally attacked his sleeping partner faces jail.

Gary Cairns, 30, pounced on the woman at her home in North Lanarkshire, on February 5, 2023.

Cairns attempted to rouse his partner awake and bit her on the upper arm.

Cairns, of Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, then followed her into another bedroom where he threw a glass of water over her.

The serial domestic abuser also snatched the woman's mobile phone and threw it at her face.

Cairns went on to throw his terrified partner to the ground and grabbed her neck before she was able to escape.

Cairns pleaded guilty today at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assault to injury.

The court heard that the pair had been in a relationship for 18 months.

They had been out for dinner and drinks earlier that night in Glasgow city centre.

The woman went home to go to sleep and left Cairns in the city centre.

Around 2am, Cairns attended her property while heavily intoxicated.

Prosecutor Jessica McGowan said: "Cairns went into her bedroom and was trying to rouse her.

"He attempted to grab her attention by biting her on the upper arm."

The victim told Cairns to leave her alone and she went to another bedroom to go to sleep.

Miss McGowan said: "Cairns entered the bedroom and threw a glass of water over while she tried to get to sleep again."

The woman told Cairns to leave her alone or she would phone the police.

Cairns then grabbed his partner's phone from her hand and threw it at her.

Miss McGowan said: "It struck her face causing an injury to her lip.

"He then pushed her to the ground then grabbed her by the neck."

The terrified woman was able to remove herself and dialled 999.

Officers appeared by Cairns had fled the scene before their arrival.

He handed himself into a police station three days later.

Paul Sweeney, defending, told the court that Cairns has previous convictions for similar offences which included a matter against the same woman.

The lawyer said: "He is self-employed at G-Tec Fire & Security which fits CCTV, data firewalls and entry systems.

"He is taking steps to address his pattern of offending."

Sentence was deferred on the dad-of-one until December by Sheriff Joan Kerr who granted Cairns bail meantime.
