A CONVICTED attempted murderer who threw a kettle of boiling water over a prisoner was jailed today for 20 months.

Mark Kane, 34, struck Jarrid Duff in the shower room at Glasgow's HMP Barlinnie on May 14, 2023.

Duff - who is serving a seven-year sentence for raping a 14-year-old girl - believed that the water contained sugar which has the capacity to cause deeper burns.

Kane was also sentenced to seven years behind bars in 2011 after a murder bid on then-17-year-old Brian Khan in High Blantyre.

Kane, formerly of Hamilton, tried to hit his victim on the head before stabbing him twice on the body - puncturing his lung.

He was also put on an order for lifelong restriction in November 2020 for a high court assault and robbery.

Kane threatened to "zap" a then 55-year-old carer after she did a home visit if she did not hand over her handbag.

Kane was caged for two years for the High Court offence.

Kane pleaded guilty today at Glasgow Sheriff Court to his latest charge of assault to severe injury.

The court heard that prison officers saw Kane and Duff run out of the shower area.

Duff appeared to have a wet t-shirt and trousers on.

Duff initially refused to engage with prison officers but later stated that Kane entered the shower area and threw "boiling water" on him.

Prosecutor Victoria Keel added: "Duff believed that the water contained sugar."

Duff was taken to hospital where he was treated for burns to his face, neck, right shoulder and upper arm.

Gerry Devaney, defending, told the court that his client attempted to plead guilty to the charge at an earlier opportunity.

Sheriff Tom Hughes told Kane: "Obviously this is a very serious matter and it is quite clear custody will need to be imposed."
