Glasgow City Council have spoken out after police blocked off a Glasgow Road as a remembrance parade took place.

We previously reported that cops locked down London Road this morning after a march involving 70 participants from the Bridgeton Apprentice Boys of Derry was approved to take place.

According to Glasgow City Council's public processions page, the group was planned to go through Cathedral Square, John Knox Street, Duke Street, Bellgrove Street, Abercromby Street, London Road, Bridgeton Cross, James Street, MacKeith Street, and Tullis Street.

An eyewitness told the Glasgow Times that the presence appeared to be a barricade for the march.

Following the incident, a spokesman for the council said they received no reports that would justify imposing conditions on the procession.

The spokesman added: “The legislation that governs public processions and how councils respond to them is set nationally.

“There is a presumption in law that processions can take place, unless there is a reason to intervene – and these reasons are quite narrowly defined in the statutory framework.

“Ultimately, a local authority requires credible evidence in order to take such a step – usually by way of intelligence from the police about a risk of disorder or a threat to public safety.

“We can only ever look at events on a case by case basis and, in this case, we received no reports that would justify imposing conditions on the procession under the legislation.”

An eye-witness at the scene told the Glasgow Times: "I was driving down London Road when I saw blue flashing lights. Everyone started doing a U-turn as police wouldn’t let anyone past.

“At one side, I could see the marching band standing outside the barricade and not able to go any further due to police.

"Inside was a group of people dressed head to toe in black with their faces covered.

“No one was saying anything but there was hunners of polis.”
