Deacon Blue have revealed their new album will pay tribute to Glasgow's Great Western Road.

The Dignity hitmakers, Ricky Ross and Lorraine McIntosh, appeared on the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2 this morning to talk about the record - which will be released next year.

"Great Western Road leads from the city centre through the West End of Glasgow - which is a really cool and trendy part - and I always thought that for a certain time we owned that. It was the place we wanted to be and we seemed part of it for about two months in 1987.

"The band would meet at a bar called Chimmy Chungas and it was the gang headquarters of Deacon Blue - that's what Great Western Road was for me."

The first single off the record, Late 88, was previewed on the show today.

Speaking on the track, Ricky said: "Late '88 is about going back to 1988 which was a hugely exciting time for us.

"We were on tour and making a record in late 1988 and we brought out Real Gone Kid in the summer. When that song came out it changed our lives, it changed everything."

Lorraine added: "I came from a small town in Scotland and suddenly we were in Glasgow, in bands and busking, and a few months later we were in London recording an album. It was a dream come true.

"It's exciting to look back on that time of being young and that great feeling that everything is possible."

The cover of Raintown shows a view of a rainy day over Glasgow's West End, with the back cover showing a long-exposure shot of the M8 motorway, with the Mitchell Library and Elmbank Gardens on either side.

The pair went on to share that they will be playing a few theatre shows as well as the bigger stages across the UK following the album release.

As Zoe spoke to the couple about the intimacy of theatre shows, Lorraine joked: "Yes, they are terrifying."

The upcoming run of shows will include two performances at Glasgow's OVO Hydro in the West End of the city.

The shows will take place on Friday and Saturday, October 10 and 11, 2025.

Tickets will go on sale at 10am on November 29, 2024.
