One of Glasgow’s best-known Art Deco landmarks is set for a new lease of life.

Plans have been unveiled to transform the former C&A building on Sauchiehall Street into a 132-bedroom boutique hotel.

The proposals involve the sensitive refurbishment and extension of the iconic 1929 building, which has been vacant since 2017.

Murray Henderson, co-founder of Glasgow-based architects Haus, said: "This is a significant building in the story of Sauchiehall Street and one that holds many memories for generations of Glaswegians.

"Our approach has been shaped by a respect for its architectural character, historic significance, and prominent role within the city centre.

"The proposals are founded on a conservation-led strategy that prioritises the retention, repair and adaptation of the existing building.

"Rather than replacing what is already here, we are seeking to give the building a sustainable new future that supports the ongoing renewal of Sauchiehall Street while celebrating its distinctive Art Deco heritage."

The hotel will have an entrance on Cambridge Street and will include a bar, restaurant, and a three-storey extension with a rooftop terrace.

Commercial space will be retained along the Sauchiehall Street frontage.

The building at 218-224 Sauchiehall Street was originally home to C&A and later occupied by Dunnes Stores until 2017.

Although not classified as a major development, the project team has chosen to share proposals with the public before submitting a planning application.

Mr Henderson said: "Successful city-centre regeneration depends on collaboration and dialogue.

"Although this project is not subject to the statutory consultation requirements associated with major developments, we felt it was important to share the proposals at an early stage, listen to local views and provide an opportunity for people to engage with the design before a planning application is submitted."

An information event will take place on Wednesday, June 17, at Edward House, 199 Sauchiehall Street, from 2pm to 6pm.

Members of the public can view the plans, ask questions, and meet the project team.

The exhibition will remain on display until Thursday, June 25, at the Glasgow Life project space within Edward House.

A planning application is expected to be submitted later this summer.
