DANNY McGrain has admitted he was honoured and humbled to be asked by Celtic to unfurl the Ladbrokes Premiership flag before their game against Livingston at Parkhead a week tomorrow.

McGrain spent no fewer than 20 years as a player at the Glasgow club during which time he was regarded as one of the best, if not the best, full-backs in the world.

The Scotland defender made a total of 663 first team appearances between 1970 and 1987 and won seven league titles, five Scottish Cups and two League Cups.

“This is a wonderful honour for me and my family and I would like to thank the club for inviting me to unfurl the league flag before the game against Livingston,” he told the Celtic website.

“The day is all about the team of course, and their great achievement in winning the Premiership title last season, and it’s right that they should take centre-stage.

“I congratulate the players, Brendan and our backroom team again for delivering such a memorable season last year and I am sure they will be doing everything they can to bring our fans even more success.

“There are many great figures in Celtic’s history who would deserve to be invited to unfurl the flag, so I’m both honoured and humbled that the club has asked me to do so.

“My family and I are all looking forward to it, although we’re all looking forward more to supporting both the team and the club in the season ahead.”

Celtic chairman Ian Bankier told the club's website: “We were delighted to ask Danny to undertake this great honour at our opening League match on August 4. He is a man who has been part of the club for so many years and someone who is very deserving of this great accolade.

"It is fitting that someone who delivered such success to the club will be marking another season of such success and dominance for the club. We know what the club means to Danny and we know exactly he means to our supporters.

"We are sure he will be a very popular choice and I know our fans will enjoy seeing a true Celtic great, who has given us so much, open the season, with the club once again at the top of Scottish football."
