JIM STEWART hopes Allan McGregor can roll back the years and inspire Rangers to silverware success on his return to Ibrox.

The keeper won ten major honours during his first stint in Light Blue before he left to join Turkish giants Besiktas six years ago.

But he clinched a two-year deal with the Gers this summer as he became the second signing of Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox overhaul.

McGregor has been one of Rangers’ most impressive performers in the early weeks of the new season and earned four clean sheets from the matches with Bury, Shkupi and Osijek.

Stewart worked alongside the 36-year-old as part of Walter Smith’s backroom staff during the legendary manager’s second spell at Ibrox.

And the renowned keeper coach is confident McGregor will be a key part of Gerrard’s blueprint for success in the coming months.

Stewart told SportTimes: “The biggest thing about Allan is that he has got that edge and he is back at the club that he supported as a youngster and where he had an excellent time earlier in his career.

“For him to come back is a major plus for Rangers. It will raise the bar for Wes Foderingham and Jak Alnwick when they see how he works and how he operates and, in turn, Allan knows that he needs to be on his game because the other guys are there pushing him for that first team spot.

“At the end of the day, Allan’s reputation when he was there before was excellent and he was part of a successful Rangers side. He left and moved on to Besiktas and Hull and played in an FA Cup final and the Premier League.

“He has still be involved heavily with the national squad as well and that competitiveness has always been there with Allan.

“There is lure of coming back to Rangers for him and hopefully he can come in and help the club progress and be part of a better time again. At this stage of his career, I think that challenge will invigorate him.”
