If I was in Brendan’s shoes ahead of tomorrow night’s game, I think I’d absolutely be going for it.
We all know that Brendan liked an attacking formation anyway but I do just wonder whether Leigh Griffiths has done enough to get himself in there from the start against AEK Athens.
I don’t think it quite worked with Leigh and Moussa Dembele together but the Scotland internationalist and Odsonne Edouard starting together may well be something to consider.
In any case, you really want to go out and get the job done in this first leg. I actually think that the second half against Rosenborg at Celtic Park was the best that I have seen Celtic play this season.
They blew them away and if the can produce a performance of similar quality then they can get on the place to Greece next week knowing that they have put in the hard graft.
The play-off round looks very doable for Celtic but I am sure that they will be focussing on this round before anything else. As a player you do always have a wee look to see who you’d be up against next and I think that there will be a feeling that getting past Athens is probably as tough as it gets.
There has been a clear plan from Celtic to get into the group stages again but they are only at the halfway stage now.
This is the big one for them and I think you want to go out and be as positive as you possibly can be.
The toughest exit for me to take at this stage when I was at Celtic player was the defeat to Artmedia Bratislava. It was so tough not just because we had messed up over there so badly when we lost 5-0 but because we felt they weren’t a great team.
We pulverised them at Celtic Park and won 4-0 but we were so close to pulling it back. Aiden McGeady had missed a chance from a yard out at 5-0 in Bratislava and you always felt that if we had had that little bit of something to give us hope we just might have done it.
But there is no doubt that these are tough games at such an early stage of the season. You just need to find a way to get through them, no matter what it takes.
