Darian MacKinnon wants Hamilton Accies to rediscover the home comforts after slumping to defeat against St Johnstone.

A double whammy just before half time from the visitors, which saw them take advantage of poor defending, helped St Johnstone record a fifth straight win over the Accies.

Hamilton did rally with a Rakish Bingham goal with 20 minutes remaining but the hosts left themselves with too much to do.

MacKinnon said: “We’ve lost two rubbish goals and if there’s one team in this league you can’t do that to, it’s St Johnstone because they make it very difficult for you to get back in the game. It’s disappointing because we saw this one as a chance to take the three points and push up the table.

“They have an experienced squad plus I think they also have more quality this season. When we were going for the equaliser they had a few breakaways with their wide men and Tony Watt. They’re a good side but this is a game we should be winning.

“We played well in spells and they scored against the run of play and then we gave them another one just before half-time, which is criminal.

“Our home record was terrible last year. We want to get back to the Hamilton of old where, if teams didn’t quite fear coming here, they at least knew they’d be in for a tough game. We’ve been too easy to beat in recent years.

“The first thing I did when I got back into the dressing room was to check the other scores but we don’t want to get into the situation this early in the season where we’re looking for other teams to do us favours. We want to sort this out ourselves and we should’ve won this one.”

Martin Canning, the Accies manager, managed to add four new faces to his squad on transfer deadline day. While none of them featured at the weekend, MacKinnon is confident the arrivals will bolster the ranks.

He added: “We’ve made good signings and the good thing is that they’re not unknowns. We know what James Keating will bring, the big No.9 from Molde [Fredrik Brustad] will be the pacy target man, Matt Kilgallon will be a leader at the back who will win headers and Scott Martin will add energy and get stuck in in the middle of the park.”
