NEW Scotland captain Andy Robertson told the Tartan Army to put their trust in the SFA board when it comes to making the right decision about the future of Hampden Park. The famous Mount Florida ground, which the 24-year-old graced in the colours of Queen’s Park, has been the home of the Scotland national team for 112 years, but all that hangs in the balance right now as chief executive Ian Maxwell and the rest of the SFA hierarchy mulling over whether to buy the stadium lock stock from the Spiders or alternatively uproot international matches and Scottish Cup semi-finals and finals to the home of Scottish Rugby at Murrayfield.

Robertson, who will proudly lead his nation out for the first time against Belgium tonight, will keep his views on the subject in-house but has backed the game’s rulers to make the correct decision.

“As players we have been very much kept out of it and that’s the way it has to be,” said Robertson. “It’s up to the people above to come to an agreement with Queens Park or Murrayfield, whoever it is. Of course if the players get an opinion we’ll do that behind closed doors. But it has to be the board who deal with that and I am sure they’ll make the right decision for Scottish football. There has been a lot of debate and a lot of people who are split, but I am sure they’ll come to the right decision.”

In the short term, Robertson’s ascension to the top playing job in the Scottish game should add some numbers to the gate. In the long-term his ambitions are leading the team out at Hampden for matches at Euro 2020, which could be Scotland’s first appearance at a major male finals since 1998.

“For the country, the ambition has to be getting back to championships,” said Robertson. “Too long has passed when we have not managed to qualify. The captains before me would have said the exact same thing. I spoke to Darren Fletcher when he wasn’t playing, near the end, and that was his biggest disappointment - that he hadn’t managed to get us back to a World Cup or a Euros. I don’t want that to be me. I want us to manage to get to a championship and lead the boys out. We’ve got a great chance here. Hopefully we can do it at the first time of asking.”
