LONG-SERVING players Niko Matawalu and Alex Allan will both leave Glasgow at the end of the season, the Warriors have announced. 

For Matawalu, now 32, the departure will bring to an end a second spell at Scotstoun. The Fijian international first joined the team in 2012, leaving for England in the summer following Glasgow’s PRO12 title triumph. Primarily a scrum-half during his first spell with the Warriors, he has often featured on the wing since rejoining in 2017.

Allan, who has eight Scotland caps, has been part of the Glasgow squad since 2014. Now 29, the loosehead prop has, like Matawalu, made more than 100 appearances in a Warriors jersey. “I am immensely proud to have represented Glasgow Warriors,” he said on the team’s website. 

“There have been some incredible moments over the last seven years both on and off the pitch. I have been fortunate enough to be part of some incredible victories and I wish the team the best for the future.”

Matawalu, one of the most entertaining and unpredictable players in the game, said he had felt at home with the Warriors since the beginning of his time with them. “When I first joined Glasgow Warriors in 2012 the biggest thing that stood out to me was the culture that the players created. I loved how the club had clans, traditions and customs – all like Fiji,” he said.

“A lot of things have changed over my years here but what makes Glasgow Warriors special hasn’t. Glasgow is my second home and I feel an immense sense of pride to have been part of this wonderful club. Every time I pulled on the Warriors jersey the most important thing for me was to enjoy every moment.”
