Clive Tyldesley and Ally McCoist have been revealed as the UK’s favourite commentary duo at Euro 2020, new research has revealed.
Twenty-four teams are set to battle it out over the next few weeks for major European honours but there will be bragging rights up for grabs behind the camera as well, with the UK’s two major broadcasters competing to provide the best coverage of the tournament.
It is ITV who have the immediate upper hand with Clive Tyldesley and Ally McCoist revealed as the UK public’s ideal commentary team in new research revealed by OLBG’s Commentator Rankings, which ranks each pundit, co-commentator, lead commentator and presenters from BBC and ITV (as well as a select few from Sky Sports and BT Sport) based on their online popularity.
The pair have already started brightly, with their match between Netherlands and Ukraine seeing five goals and Rangers icon McCoist predictably trending on Twitter for the right reasons.
Analysis has been taken from tweets sent about each person named as part of the respective broadcast teams ahead of Euro 2020 since the line-ups were announced, to reveal which channel the public will favour when watching this summer’s festival of football.
Assuming that each broadcast features one presenter, one commentator and co-commentator alongside three pundits in the studio, Commentator Rankings’ study revealed that the public’s ideal line-up this summer would be:
Presenter: Mark Chapman (BBC)
Commentator/co-commentator: Clive Tyldesley (ITV) and Ally McCoist (ITV)
Pundits: Ian Wright (ITV), Cesc Fabregas (BBC) and Micah Richards (BBC)
Although Ian Wright is always a hit with fans and looks to be a shrewd signing by ITV, it is the BBC who appear to have secured the best squad of pundits, with Fabregas, Richards, Alex Scott, Jurgen Klinsmann and Rio Ferdinand in the top 10 according to public opinion, while Roy Keane is another big hitter for ITV.
With Scott representing the BBC, Chelsea boss Emma Hayes will appear throughout the tournament for ITV and it is clear that fans are looking forward to hearing from the WSL Manager of the Year, making her the fifth most eagerly-anticipated pundit of the summer.
In terms of least popular in each category, Lee Dixon is surprisingly bottom of the list in terms of co-commentators while Mark Pougatch - also of ITV - isn’t a hit with viewers and the signings of Nigel de Jong, Joe Ledley and John Collins have not captured the imagination of the public.
