Former Rangers captain Ally Dawson has passed away at the age of 63. 

Ally, born Alistair Dawson, joined the Gers at the age of 16 as a defender, making his debut for the club against Queen's Park in a Glasgow Cup game in September 1975. 

Rangers paid tribute to the former player, saying: "Rangers Football Club are today extremely saddened to hear of the passing of former player Alistair “Ally” Dawson at the age of 63."

 

He made 315 appearances for Rangers across 12 seasons, playing under managers such as Jock Wallace, John Greig and Graeme Souness.

As captain of the club, Ally won six honours, including the League Cup and the Scottish Cup, as well as earning five caps for Scotland

Following his retirement as a player, Ally went onto manage Hamilton Academical, where he won the Third Division title. 

He continued to be involved with Rangers up until recent years, working with the Rangers’ Academy and Rangers Soccer Academies, and was inducted into the Rangers' Hall of Fame in 2011.

Hamilton Academical also paid tribute to Ally, saying that they are "saddened" by the news of his death.

One fan said: "Incredibly saddened to learn of the untimely passing of Ally Dawson.

"A vastly underrated player who won many trophies during a lengthy spell with the Rangers and gained 5 caps for Scotland. May he sleep well in blue heaven."
