KILLIE extended their lead at the summit of the Championship table to five-points after a 1-1 draw with Morton at Cappielow.
While it was not the win Derek McInnes was looking for to heap further pressure on title challengers Arbroath, considering how impressive Morton were, a point was far from the worst result.
Gozie Ugwu and Oli Shaw were the scorers in the match, with both strikes coming in the second-half.
Gavin Reilly had the first clear cut chance of the game after breaking through the heart of the Killie defence. But the striker’s shot was straight at Zach Hemming.
The Ton were all over Killie at this point, and Cameron Blues should’ve made it 1-0 not long after. Clean through on goal, he narrowly fired wide as the league leaders looked spooked.
Into the second-half, the Ton started brighter again. Lewis Strapp, who impressed throughout, burst down the left. With no other options on, he blasted a shot at goal – and it whistled just over the bar.
Killie would eventually get an opportunity. Blair Alston played a nice ball over the top to Shaw, but the striker hit his shot first-time over the bar.
But the Ton would get the goal they deserved. Ugwu got up early to tower home his back-post header after a great cross into the box from Iain Wilson.
The big striker was superb at leading the line all evening and thoroughly merited his goal.
However, when you’re fighting for titles, you don’t give up easily. Shaw stepped up to score a vital penalty for the away team after Brian McLean was penalised for handball.
The game continued to be a scrappy affair, with Shaw having one more chance to bag a winner, but it was well blocked as the game finished a draw.
In the other game of the evening, Ayr and Hamilton shared the spoils with a 1-1 draw of their own.
Accies took an early lead after just seven minutes through Andy Winter, who made it three goals from three games with a curling effort.
And the home side would equalise in the dying moments of the match, with Kerr McInroy scoring with virtually the last kick of the game.
