BEVIS MUGABI insists he never doubted that he’d have the chance to play on the European stage for Motherwell again. 

The defender was sent off during his last appearance for the club while featuring in UEFA competitions. 

The 27-year-old was shown a straight red card versus Colraine in 2020 as part of the Steelmen’s Europa League qualifiers having finished in third spot during the coronavirus-curtailed campaign. 

‘Well did progress from the one-off tie on penalties, as they set up a tie against Hapoel Be’er Sheva. 

Mugabi sat out that match as Stephen Robinson’s men exited the tournament at the third qualifying round. 

The Ugandan reflected on his devastation at being sent off ahead of tonight’s Conference League qualifier against Sligo.  

But he insists his faith in being able to play at this level with Motherwell again never wavered. 

He said: "I just remember walking down the tunnel devastated but we managed to get through on a penalty shootout with Trevor Carson making a couple of good saves. Hopefully no more red cards for myself! 

“It was very disappointing. I watched the game online and seeing the boys getting knocked out wasn't a good experience. Being side-lined and not being able to help the team was disappointing. Now I've got another opportunity to have a good European run. 

"I never wrote it off. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it and if you start off strong in the season then finishing top six is possible. 

"I'm sure we are capable of beating anyone in the league, so I didn't write it off at all, no chance." 

Unlike in 2020, a big crowd will be in the stands at Fir Park to cheer on the team.  

Mugabi reckons that could be key in spurring the Steelmen on. He added: "It feels like there will be a much better atmosphere than the Covid season, where the atmosphere wasn't particularly enjoyable with fans not being there. I am glad we can do it properly this time."
