Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon was struck by a missile from the away end as his side faced FC Zurich in the second leg of their Europa League qualifier.
The Tynecastle flashpoint, which was picked up and highlighted on the BBC Scotland coverage of the game, occurred in the 67th minute with the match evenly poised at 0-0.
Former Celtic star Gordon prepared to take a free-kick near the byline and was pelted by what appeared to be a coin as he was set to strike the ball.
The keeper bend down holding his head and was approached by the match official.
The Scotland keeper appeared to then say "I'm fine" and continued with the game.
Zurich fans were meant to be housed further from the pitch but had taken it upon themselves to jump a barrier en masse and proceed to the front area of the stand.
It meant they were within throwing distance of the pitch.
Watching BBC pundit James McFadden said: "I don't know what goes through someone's head to throw something on the pitch."
