CELTIC are reportedly weighing up a bid for Canadian World Cup star Alistair Johnston.

It's claimed Ange Postecoglou is a fan of the right-sided defender who starred for Canada against Belgium. 

While he was on the losing side in a 1-0 loss, Johnston impressed as Canada pushed to cause another tournament upset in Qatar.

Johnston, 24, is a regular in the Canada set up and plays his club football with CF Montreal in the MLS.

The Scottish Sun claim Celtic are considering a transfer swoop for Johnston who only moved to Montreal from Nashville in an £800,000 deal in December.

CF Montreal sporting director was highly complimentary of Johnston on and off the field when he was announced as a signing for the MLS side.

Speaking at the time, he said: “We are pleased to welcome this young Canadian who had a strong desire to join the club.

“Beyond his footballing qualities, Alistair has demonstrated an exemplary mindset with the Canadian national team.

"He is a versatile defender who can play both as a right-back as well as part of a three-man defense.

"We will continue closely working with him to further his progression. We are delighted to welcome him to the team.”

The reports come after Celtic announced the signing of Yuki Kobayashi who will join in the January transfer window.

Postecoglou stated that the club have been following the player for a while before striking a deal for January 1.

Kobayashi is a left-sided central defender and will sign a five-year deal at Celtic as he deaprts Vissel Kobe.

On signing for Celtic, Kobayashi said:"I am so excited to be joining Celtic and I am really looking forward to this wonderful opportunity.  

"I will be giving everything to try and be successful with the Club.

'Right across the world, everyone knows what a special club Celtic is and it will be a real honour to wear this fantastic jersey.'
