He was used to lifting trophies as a player and now Ally McCoist is tasting silverware as a pundit.

The Rangers and Scotland hero last night picked up the "Pundit of the Year" award, which is awarded by the Sports Journalists' Association.

McCoist was rewarded for his work due to his "tone, expertise and delivery", while working for the likes of TalkSPORT, BT Sport, ITV and Sky Sports.

Among the commendations was a note of McCoist’s ability to “talk sense in an amusing way… he is funny, informed and a joy to listen to. He enriches without excess or irrelevance”.

After picking up his award, McCoist said: "In all seriousness, I did not expect to be standing here winning this award.

"Looking at the competition, the competition was fierce. I don't think Roy Keane has had a worse 48 hours to be fair to him.

"I love my job, I am the luckiest man alive. I really am.

"Rangers centre forward, Scotland centre forward and now working with the guys at talkSPORT and ITV. I love every minute of it.

"I didn't think my night could get any better after meeting Rob Burrow and his family, I was a big pal of Doddie Weir's as you know, and those two guys epitomise the spirit of the human being. It is fantastic."

The previous winners of this honour at the SJA British Sports Journalism Awards include Emma Hayes, Michael Holding, Gary Neville and Osi Umenyiora.

Up for the award this year were; Alan Shearer – BBC Sport, Alex Scott – BBC Sport, Ally McCoist – talkSPORT, Chris Sutton – BBC Radio 5 Live, David Coulthard – Whisper, Ian Wright – ITV Sport, Jason Bell – Sky Sports, Jon Wilkin – BBC Sport, Nasser Hussain – Sky Sports and Roy Keane – ITV Sport / Sky Sports.
