Celtic have released a statement on the "hugely concerning incident" where women's first-team manager Fran Alonso was allegedly headbutted by a Rangers coach.

In explosive scenes at full-time after the 1-1 draw between Celtic and Rangers women, coach Craig McPherson allegedly headbutted Alonso.

The alleged incident sparked a rammy between players and coaches with Sky Sports cameras capturing the furious scenes.

Now, Celtic have slammed the alleged incident as "falling well below any acceptable standard".

A Celtic spokesperson told the Scottish Sun: "Clearly this is a hugely concerning incident, falling well below any acceptable standard.

“We understand the matter is now being investigated and it will be up to all relevant authorities to take any appropriate action.”

Police Scotland enquiries into the incident are underway to establish whether any criminality occurred.

And the PA news agency reports the Scottish FA could investigate the incident through the compliance officer when the referee's report has been submitted.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We have received a report regarding an incident at Broadwood Stadium on the evening of Monday, 27 March.

"Enquiries to establish any criminality are at an early stage.”

Alonso told Sky Sports after the match: "I don't know, you can see there somebody pushed me from behind. I do not know, I never talked to him the whole game.

"Obviously it is disappointing to concede a goal in the last minute, I totally get it but I don't know.

"I was called little rat."
