Anti-monarchy chants from Celtic fans last week have certainly caused a stir this week.

Several TV shows south of the border have covered the Hoops fans' views, mainly condemning them ahead of the King's Coronation today on Saturday, May 6.

However, guests on BBC's Have I Got News For You seem to have taken a more balanced standpoint - even if there was a strong hint of sarcasm thrown in for good measure.

Discussing the Coronation, presenter Alexander Armstrong highlighted that some sections of the country are not happy with the Oath of Allegiance dedicated to King Charles.

He read out a statement from an anti-monarchy protest group, which said: "In a democracy, it is the head of state that should swear allegiance to us. This is an offensive and tone-deaf gesture that holds the people in contempt." 

The renowned Pointless host then said: "Or as the Celtic fans put it," before airing a clip of the Hoops fans at Hampden last week singing 'You can shove your Coronation up your a***".

Maisie Adam, appearing on the panel alongside the likes of Paul Merton and Ian Hislop, then cheekily jumped in, responding to the chants: "As part of the BBC's impartiality, do you think they'll have to have that on Songs of Praise?"

And Celtic supporters have been quick to give their reaction to the clip on social media.

One fan said on Twitter: "What a week it’s been as a Celtic fan."

Sarcastically, another added: "The Green Brigade on Songs of Praise. Now that I would watch."

A third wrote: "Excellent content."

And another said: "English audience cheering."

Another talking point from the show was Hislop's pronunciation of Celtic. He said their name as CEL-tic - with a hard 'c' rather than a soft 'c'.

He said: "Once the Stone of Scone returns the Celtic fans are going to change their minds."

And Armstrong interjected: "They go by Celtic, just to trip you up."

Hislop then made an admission: "Well, just to balance things up, I'll say I really like RAN-gers."

It comes just days after Piers Morgan slammed the same chants from last week's Celtic win over Rangers at the national stadium. 

Appearing on TalkTV, the former Britain's Got Talent judge stuck the boot in. 

He commented: "Well, utterly charming as ever of course from Celtic fans. 

"But that's what they've always been like towards our monarchy and I have a similar view of Celtic fans."
