Rangers fans have outlined how much the club means to them as they returned to Ibrox for the first competitive fixture of the season.

The Govan side hosted Swiss opponents Servette FC where they ran out 2-1 winners in the third round of the Champions League qualifiers.

And the Glasgow Times caught up with fans when they arrived at the ground to find out how much being back at the stadium meant to them.

Les Melrose, 79, from Troon has been coming to Ibrox since the 1950s and is now in his 71st season as a fan, but the veteran supporter explained why match days are important to him.

He said: "Rangers means everything to me as it was the club I supported since I was a young boy.

"As I get older it means more to me as it motivates me to get out of the house and come to Glasgow, whereas if I don't need to go out, I don't go out.

"This morning I was up bright and early, and geared to go to the match and was excited to get into the city."

Derek McCutcheon, 41, from Dumfries and Galloway, said: "I started going to games when I was primary school age and I've been coming ever since.

"My weekends revolve around Rangers. I always try and make sure when I'm not at the games that I catch it whenever, wherever, I can.

"Being back at Ibrox for the football is brilliant and to have a Champions League game is really exciting."

Michael Mowat, 32, from Thurso, travelled down to the game and he said: "Been a Rangers fan since I was born and it means everything in terms of getting together with friends and family

"The nature of my job means I work away from home but when I'm not working, I always try and ensure that I get to home and away matches as much as possible.

"It's exciting to be back at Ibrox for another season and tonight, under the lights, it should be a fun occasion.

Wayne Montgomery, 51, has been a lifelong Rangers fan from Vancouver, Canada and was taking in the game on Wednesday night during a trip to Scotland

With family connections in Glasgow – his grandparents having stayed on Paisley Road West when he was young – Wayne describes what taking in Ibrox meant to him. 

He said: "I was originally born in Northern Ireland.

"We came here [Scotland] and the trip was planned around attending this game. 

"We're going back to Northern Ireland for a week before coming back and taking in the Scottish Cup game against Greenock Morton."

Neil Best, 38, from Kent, was attending the game with his son as he runs a supporters club down in England. 

He said: "The club are massive in my life and I've been supporting them since I was a teenager.

"Planning to come up to watch games is quite a big thing and costly to do too but it's because of the love for the club I do it."

The first Scottish Premiership match at Ibrox will take place this Saturday as Rangers take on Livingston at 3pm.
