Chris Sutton has questioned whether things could get "ugly" for Brendan Rodgers at Celtic.

In fact, the former Hoops striker wonders if it's already started to turn that way for the Irishman upon his return to Parkhead.

It's been far from an ideal start to the season for last term's treble winners.

They have already been knocked out of the Viaplay Cup by Kilmarnock at the last 16 stage, and at the weekend, they dropped two points at home to St Johnstone.

Celtic face a crunch derby match next up this weekend, with a trip to Ibrox on the cards.

Audible boos have already been heard by some of the Celtic faithful directed towards the team and manager in the aforementioned games.

And Sutton reckons Rodgers may need a big result against Rangers to halt any mounting pressure coming from the stands.

He said on BBC Radio 5 Live: "It's massive. I remember when you put it to me about Brendan Rodgers returning and I said 'absolutely no chance.' Anyway, he's gone back there and it's getting a little bit...dare I say 'ugly?'

"Just because of Celtic's iffy start to the season. They're top of the league but I'm just telling you there are Celtic supporters who probably were quiet because he was the best candidate to take the job.

"But with the way he left before, it could turn ugly pretty quickly especially if they get walloped at Ibrox. They haven't done anywhere near enough work in the transfer market in terms of signings."
