Brendan Rodgers reckons Don Robertson was right to deny Kemar Roofe's opener for Rangers against Celtic.

The Parkhead boss did however fear the worst when Roofe slammed past Joe Hart after 28 minutes at Ibrox.

Robertson overturned the goal award after being called to view the challenge from Cyriel Dessers on Gustaf Lagerbielke in the build-up to the goal.

And the official decided Dessers had fouled Lagerbielke before teeing up Roofe.

In the moment, Rodgers feared his centre-back had been punished for being too slow on the ball, but insists having watched replays the foul was the correct call.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Rodgers said: "Firstly, I thought Gus was slow on it and we needed to make a better angle for him and that's why he probably stayed on it a little bit longer.

"But when you see it back he's clipped him and obviously we get the moment go our way.

"Up until that point we were in control so I would have been really disappointed if we conceded at that moment.

"He will learn from that as a really young player, that you can't dwell on it, you have got to see the pass and be clean and get it away."

On BBC Scotland, he added: "Gustaf has got to look to get his passes away quicker however in saying that he looks like he was nicked from behind.

"Rangers will probably say it was never a foul but the referees, there were enough officials looking at it and they deemed it to be that."
