Chris Sutton has cheekily called for Kris Boyd to receive a ban after his comments regarding Aberdeen's tendency to 'raise their game' against Rangers.

Last time out, former Gers and Kilmarnock striker Boyd blasted the Dons for their failure to lay a glove on Celtic at Parkhead. That game finished 6-0 to Brendan Rodgers' men.

He inferred that Aberdeen play better against Rangers than they do against Celtic because of the rivalry between the two clubs.

Boyd has doubled down on that claim today - and he has taken issue with Sutton for pulling him up for the comments, reminding him of his retort that Dunfermline lay day on helicopter Sunday 20 years ago.

Boyd said on Sky Sports: “I said Barry Robson won’t have a problem getting his players up for this one. I stand by it. lot of people focused on what I didn't say rather than what I did say. Celtic were never mentioned.

"My point was that Aberdeen were rubbish against Kilmarnock and Celtic but they would have no problem today. People focused on the Celtic element because it came after a game against them. But I didn’t mention Celtic.

“The stadium is at fever pitch. I’ve been up here as a player with Kilmarnock and Rangers. There’s no doubt there is a hostile environment probably from the Monday until whenever the game is. It was embarrassing to lose six goals in 90 minutes but they won’t have an issue getting up for today.”

Boyd then referenced Sutton's infamous comments about Dunfermline's performance against Rangers in 2003, telling the Englishman he was 'speaking from experience'.

Sutton responded: “I got a six game ban for that! I wish you’d be banned for this. You doubled down and you questioned the Aberdeen integrity. Aberdeen’s record isn’t that great against Rangers.

“The issue is Kris is a big Rangers man and they have won basically nothing - two trophies - since 2012 and he doesn’t focus on what matters. The Rangers managers through that period - Pedro (Caixinha), Mark Warburton, Graeme Murty, Steven Gerrard and Gio.

"You essentially blamed Aberdeen for Rangers’ failings. You’re talking about a rivalry. There’s a difference in terms of what you questioned them of against Celtic.

Joe Lewis added: “You’re probably comparing results against Celtic compared to Rangers. They’re two completely different teams.

Celtic have been a far better team in the last number of years and it’s been much easier to play against Rangers. They give you opportunities and have been a much weaker side which is probably why the results are better against them."
