Mikey Johnston has opened up on the moment he knew that it was best for him to leave Celtic.

The 24-year-old departed his boyhood club on deadline day as he joined West Brom on loan until the end of the season.

And the Republic of Ireland international admits that an overload of wide players at Celtic by the end of January saw him seal his move to the Championship club.

Nicolas Kuhn arrived from Rapid Vienna for £3m. He joined Liel Abada, Daizen Maeda, Yang, Luis Palma and James Forrest in the list of wingers at Brendan Rodgers' disposal, with Johnston also on the premises. 

However, since making the switch to the Hawthorns, Johnston hasn't looked back. He's scored three goals as he helped the Baggies boost their play-off hopes.

Johnston admits he had to leave the Parkhead club in order to progress his career by getting regular game-time.

He told Sky Sports: "Yeah, look it was just a game-time thing. I think at the end we had eight wingers. It was always going to be tough to get the minutes I wanted to get and I wanted to build on last year.

"I am getting older now and I want to progress my career. This felt like a nice step for me and everything was agreed between two clubs, so it was quite seamless."

Meanwhile, the treatment by Celtic fans towards Liel Abada left the winger with no choice but to leave the club.

That's the claims of his Israeli ally Avi Luzon, who is the chief of Maccabi Petah Tikva - a former club of Abada.

The attacker, 22, is set to join MLS side FC Charlotte in a £10m deal from the Hoops.

The winger is due to move on from the Scottish champions a little over six months after agreeing a new deal until the summer of 2027.
