Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson is confident Philippe Clement will be given a hefty cheque to spend in the summer - regardless of their European success. 

Rangers face Benfica on Thursday night knowing a victory would see them go one step closer to a £40million windfall.

Clement, 49, has transformed the Ibrox mood since replacing Michael Beale last Autumn and has already guided the club to Viaplay Cup success, with the Scottish Cup, Premiership and Europa League still to play for. 

Ferguson has liked what he's seen from the Belgian boss this far and reckons the January acquisitions of Oscar Cortes, Fabio Silva and Mohamed Diomande has shown he can be trusted to build his own side.

He told the Go Radio Football Show: "It would be a massive bonus if they do win it because as you just mentioned, there's a forty million pound prize. I'm sure the vast majority of that would go towards the manager. 

​"I still believe if that's not the case (and they don't win the tournament) then he will still get backed because I do think there's a lot of trust in him. 

"You see the three signings he's made in January; (Oscar) Cortes, albeit he suffered that injury down at Rugby Park, he looked good no doubt about it. 

"(Fabio) Silva, you are starting to see him produce the goods and (Mohamed) Diomande, who I think is just only going to get better and better. He's one of these players. That's the model that Rangers are trying with bringing in players. I think it's around the four million pound mark to make it permanent in the summer.

"He's one of these guys down the line, whether it's a year or two, that they can go and treble their money."
