A major rule change could be afoot ahead of Euro 2024 this summer.

Managers of all 24 nations are set to attend a summit in Dusseldorf next month to lobby the prospect of increasing squads from 23 players to 26.

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke will join his international colleagues in Germany for the pre-tournament meeting with UEFA on April 8 and 9.

One of the points set for the agenda is the number of players allowed to be selected per country for the championships.

Currently, as has been the case for quite some time, 23 players is the squad limit. 

However, there is a growing consensus among managers that this figure should be increased to 26 - the number of players that were permitted for the last Euros which was hampered by Covid in 2021.

It's believed that coaches are keen to explore the possibility of reinstating this ruling which would see a further three players allowed on the plane to Germany.

Gareth Southgate is one of the managers who has publicly backed the idea.

He said: “There is one more Uefa meeting where there's been a little bit of talk amongst some of the coaches about possibly increasing that.

“We've got to make the best decisions with what we know and some of those currently are going to be medical decisions.

“And we've been able to get those right in the previous tournaments. We've been able to give people time, but with 23 that's definitely more difficult.”

Andy Robertson is a potential concern heading into the summer, as the Liverpool defender hobbled off against Northern Ireland on Tuesday. 

He underwent a scan upon his return to Merseyside yesterday, but it is hoped that the 30-year-old has avoided a serious injury.

Callum McGregor and Ryan Jack have also dealt with injury issues in recent times, while Grant Hanley and Scott McKenna both pulled out of the most recent camp due to fitness issues.
