Much has been made of John Beaton's appointment to this weekend's Rangers vs Celtic fixture.

Given Brendan Rodgers' recent comments about the official during the Hoops' 2-0 loss to Hearts, many Celtic fans have pointed to their concerns about the announcement.

But former Gers player Craig Moore reckons supporters of his old club will also be 'nervous' for the very same reasons.

Beaton was announced as the referee for the game this morning by the Scottish FA.

This match will come a little over a month after Rodgers branded Beaton 'incompetent' along with fellow official Don Robertson.

This led to the 51-year-old being handed a two-game ban by the SFA at a disciplinary hearing last midweek, with one of those games being suspended until the end of the season.

So, while some Celtic fans have expressed their worries over Beaton's involvement with another Celtic game so soon after that incident, Moore reckons the blue half of Glasgow will hold a similar viewpoint but from an alternative angle.

He told Go Radio's Football Show: "I can understand why both sets of fans would be nervous about this appointment.

"Obviously the controversy surrounding the Hearts match, but when you look at the other side of the fence I have heard a lot of Rangers supporters saying because there is an extra, added pressure on John Beaton. Does he referee the game a different way?

"For me personally, I just think talking about the referees - the fans are allowed to do it but in camp both Rangers and Celtic will be on themselves. This will not be a distraction, but I can understand why it's a talking point."

Bobby Madden today took to social media insisting no matter who got Sunday's gig would 'break' the internet. 

He wrote:  "Old Firm appointment day. Internet will break no matter who is announced at 10.30."
