Lewis Ferguson is set to miss this summer's European Championships.

The Scotland midfielder has undergone a scan today which has revealed damage to his cruciate ligament in his knee.

Bologna says the 24-year-old will go for an operation as a result, with his recovery time period to be assessed afterward.

With less than two months to go until Euro 2024 in Germany though, it seems that Ferguson's injury comes as a bitter blow for both the player and Scotland.

A short statement on the club's website says: "Lewis Ferguson today underwent a medical examination which revealed that he has sustained an injury to his cruciate ligament.

"He will undergo an operation, after which his recovery time will be assessed."

The player himself wrote on social media: "Devastated but the road to recovery starts now and I will be back better than ever! Time to rest up and support the boys for a big end to the season."

The ex-Hamilton Accies and Aberdeen player has been a regular pick in Steve Clarke's Scotland squads.

Not only does this update come as a blow for the national team head coach in terms of his selection for the tournament, but with Ferguson facing a lengthy period on the sidelines to recover, it could delay his inevitable transfer away from Bologna.

Serie A giants Napoli, Juventus and Inter Milan have all been credited with holding an interest in the midfielder, who is son of former Rangers player Derek, and nephew to ex-Gers and Scotland captain Barry.

Meanwhile, St Johnstone chiefs have confirmed McDiarmid Park has been selected as an alternate for the match between Dundee and Rangers.

The Scottish Premiership fixture - which was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch twice - could be moved to Perth should the surface fail an inspection this week.

The match was first set to be played on March 17 and then on April 10 before being rescheduled to April 17.

Now, a pitch inspection will be carried out tomorrow by match referee Don Robertson to determine whether the pitch will be playable or not.
