Chris Sutton has been cleared by Ofcom following complaints about his commentary during the most recent Rangers vs Celtic match.

The TV watchdog cleared Sutton for saying that Matt O'Riley had 'some balls' for chipping his penalty beyond Jack Butland during the first half of the match.

The Denmark midfielder scored a 'Panenka' penalty to make it 2-0 to the visitors at Ibrox on April 7, with the game eventually finishing 3-3.

Sutton was on co-commentary duty for the game alongside Ian Crocker and Kenny Miller on Sky Sports.

After the spot kick was taken by O'Riley, he said: "What a nerve from Matt O'Riley. Panenka. That is courageous.

"Celtic have not got a good record from penalties this season but you've got to have some balls to do that in this fixture."

Following the game, made on live broadcast, three complaints were filed with the TV regulator about his comment. The complainants claimed they breached 'generally accepted standards'.

Now Ofcom has reviewed the footage, they have ruled that it did not warrant any further investigation under the Broadcasting Code.

An Ofcom spokesperson: "A brief remark made during the game’s commentary did not raise issues warranting investigation under our rules."

Meanwhile, the Scottish Cup final is reportedly set to go head-to-head for viewers with the FA Cup final south of the border next month.

Rangers and Celtic will meet in the showpiece event at Hampden to round off the domestic season in Scotland on Saturday, May 25. 

On the same day, Manchester will take over London as the red and blue halves of the city descend on Wembley for another derby encounter.

Glasgow's big two will meet in the final of the competition, amazingly, for the first time since 2002. 

For Manchester City and Manchester United, it's the second successive season that the teams will meet in the final.
