Philippe Clement shrugged off suggestions that he is under increased scrutiny at Rangers by insisting he has been through the same level of pressure as a manager in Belgium.

Clement won the Belgian title in his first job in the dugout with Genk before enjoying similar success with Club Brugge in his homeland before making the move to AS Monaco in France’s Ligue 1.

The Ibrox manager has made an impressive start to life at the Govan club, clawing back a seven-point deficit in the cinch Premiership to Celtic when he took over from Michael Beale in the first half of the season, while he also led his side to the knockout rounds of the Europa League.

Disappointing results in April, however, on the back of being dumped out of Europe last month at the last-16 stage by Benfica, have seen Rangers squander their advantage over Celtic for the final five fixtures of the title race.

The Scottish treble winners took full advantage of a shock defeat for Rangers against Ross County in Dingwall which was followed days later by a drab goalless draw against Dundee at Dens Park and now hold a three-point advantage – as well as a superior goal difference –and have the added advantage of a home derby to come on May 11 as they look to close out three in a row.

But Clement, whose side bounced back with a 2-0 Scottish Gas Scottish Cup semi-final win over Hearts at Hampden last Sunday, is adamant he won’t be cowed by the challenge of turning their title challenge around in their final five fixtures.

And while he has experienced title run-ins before, the Belgian admits clinching the Premiership this season with Rangers would top the lot.

Asked if closer titles were more enjoyable, Clement said: “No. They are all the same. Winning a title is the work of a whole year. 

“So, that’s consistency. I think this one would be even more [special] because you have come from so far away. 

“Nobody believed in Scotland believed in that in October. We are still in the race and we need to continue doing what we have been doing and that’s giving our absolute best in every game. We will see at the end of the race where we are at.

“But we’re going to go full [speed] to take as many points as possible. 

“You guys think that there’s only pressure in Glasgow. That’s totally not the case.”

Clement points to the turnover in managers at his former club since he left to join AS Monaco as proof that the pressure to succeed is just as great in his homeland.

And having already lifted the Viaplay Cup in his first season at Ibrox, Clement’s side’s treble aspirations are still very much real. But he still insists there is “nothing special here” and that his only focus is on navigating his side’s crucial final six fixtures.

“Look at how many managers Brugge had after I left. Look at that,” he said.

“I was in Genk after 16 years with Brugge. That was my second family. We won the title with Genk. We went to the Champions League when Brugge didn’t have Champions League because second spot had to qualify. 

“But I took the choice to go back to my second family to win a title also as a manager as I had done as a player and as an assistant.

“I wanted to do it also as the manager myself. That was my challenge. 

“They only expected one thing – that was first to qualify for the Champions League. That had never been done before by a Belgian team in the non-champion road. 

“But we did that and we also became champions. That was the only thing I could do good. 

“The next year was the first time in the history of the club when they were back to back champions. We did that also. 

“So the pressure was on every week. Look also what happened with the managers after me. 

“In that way, there’s nothing special here. That’s also what I love – challenges – or else life is boring.”
