Unlikely backing from Celtic foe for Rangers ace Cantwell

The former Celtic striker believes the 26-year-old should be given the nod by Philippe Clement to start at Celtic Park on Saturday lunchtime.

After yesterday's 4-1 win over Kilmarnock live on Sky Sports, Sutton and fellow pundit James McFadden debated who would start the game in the attacking midfield role for Rangers - Cantwell, or Tom Lawrence. 

Sutton and Cantwell have been at odds for quite some time, with the pundit making several cheap digs at the player such as 'TikTok Todd'. Cantwell hit back by branding Sutton an 'attention seeker'.

Now, it seems as though the former Norwich City player has been backed by Sutton to play against Celtic in favour of his teammate Lawrence.

Sutton said of Lawrence's lovely goal versus Killie: "He made an impact when he came on. I still don't think the Rangers fans have seen the very best of him. Really clever little shift and the finish is devastating."

Faddy added: "They bring something different. Tom Lawrence, you see that quality and he plays more as a No10 and a support to the striker.

"He's got great technique, wants to do things quick like shift the ball and get a shot away or pass. Todd Cantwell brings energy and endeavour and has quality as well.

"He will go work and press to try and unsettle opposition and find space to affect the game. He brings a different energy. For me personally, Tom Lawrence brings a bit more quality. It is not by far but I think he has more."

Sutton responded: "Do you? I don't. In terms of awareness, guile and for somebody to see a pass. I think Cantwell just has the edge on Lawrence. Over the course, Lawrence is probably a better finisher than Cantwell. They have slightly different attributes.

"It will be [John] Lundstram, [Mohamed] Diomande and one other. It will probably be similar, Cantwell will play an hour and Lawrence the last half hour I suspect."
