Neil Lennon has been invited to attend Romania's version of the Old Firm showdown this week as Rapid Bucharest pull out all the stops to persuade him to become their new manager.

Rapid have held talks with former Celtic boss Lennon as the ambitious club want to rebuild for next season, having not won a title for 21 years.

They play their final league game of the season on Sunday against bitter city rivals Steaua Bucharest at their brand-new Rapid-Giulesti Stadium.

And Rapid owner, Dan Sucu, has reportedly invited Lennon to the crunch game as he attempts to persuade him to take his first job since October 2022 when he was axed from Omonia despite leading them to Cypriot Cup glory.

Ex-Hibs and Bolton manager Lennon was linked with the vacant posts at Republic of Ireland and Aberdeen, but Rapid have made him their main target to take charge after an attempt to land 78-year-old legendary boss Mircea Lucescu broke down.

Reports in Romania have revealed Lennon has been offered a two-year deal and will be paid £750,000 a year to take charge of Rapid.

Lennon would have to agree to keep current caretaker manager, Bogdan Lobonț, as part of his staff, after he took temporary charge of the club following the sacking of former boss Cristiano Bergodi last month.

The Northern Irishman led Celtic to four Scottish Premiership titles in two spells as Hoops boss and also won the Scottish Cup three times and the League Cup once, and led Hibs to the Championship title seven years ago.
