Giorgos Giakoumakis is set for a big money move a little over a year after he left Celtic.

The Greece international is set to quit Atlanta United in favour of an £8m switch to Cruz Azul.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claims the Mexican giants are set to seal a deal for the 29-year-old, who is said to be keen on the move.

Giakoumakis headed for the United States in January 2023 after growing frustrated at his lack of regular game time under Ange Postecoglou.

He turned down an improved contract offer just months after he finished the Scottish Premiership's top scorer during the 2021/22 season - his debut campaign in Glasgow.

He more often than not was forced to play second fiddle to Kyogo though, so that eventually saw him jet off to pastures new in the MLS.

Giakoumakis said of his Celtic exit recently: "I said, ‘Okay, you know what? Now you have to give me what I deserve. I was waiting. And then they said no.

"At the end of the day, I was like 'do I want to go there again with this s*** weather - maybe even worse than Glasgow?' One year in Glasgow and I went out with my son in the park one time. That is miserable. I said (to Midtjylland) 'thank you, but I at least need the normal weather' - that was the reason.

“Carlos [Bocanegra, Atlanta vice president and technical director] was the only one, the only director that flew to Glasgow just to meet me. And I really appreciated that. They showed me straight away that, you know what, you’re really important. We don’t care if you’re going to be able to sign for [us] or not, we just want to meet you.”

It is unknown at this time if Celtic holds a sell-on clause as part of their deal with Atlanta.
