Caroline Weir looks set to return for Scotland women’s European Championship play-offs this autumn, according to Scotland manager Pedro Martinez Losa.

The Spaniard has revealed that Weir has successfully completed her rehab from an ACL sustained while playing for Scotland at Hampden last September against Belgium and will be back in full pre-season training for Real Madrid’s across the next few weeks.

Firstly, though, Weir will be in attendance at Firhill on Tuesday night as Scotland conclude their campaign with a game against Serbia, who are currently on the same points as Martinez Losa’s side going into the final double header. 

“I met Caroline for a coffee around three weeks ago in Madrid, just before her wedding,” said Martinez Losa.

“I also spoke extensively to the Madrid staff. They felt that she could probably have got some minutes in before the end of the season but they thought it best that she take it slowly.

“However, she has completed all of her rehab programme and is fully expected to be part of the squad as they return for pre-season in the next few weeks. From there it will be a case of getting minutes in and building up her match fitness but it is obviously very exciting news for Caroline and also for us.

“We all know the quality that she has and what she offers us so it will be fantastic to have her back. If all goes well then I would expect that she would be included in the next squad for the play-off games.

“She is planning on coming along to the hotel next week too to see the girls and she will be at the game on Tuesday night. She has been in regular contact with the squad throughout the last few months and is always eager to show her support to the team. Hopefully we can round off the campaign strongly and build on the confidence we have created within the group ahead of the play-offs.”

Scotland are currently top of Group B2 as they head into the final two games. They play Slovakia away this evening before hosting Serbia with a top spot from the group assuring them of a move up in the Nations League.

“We are unbeaten so far and want to keep that going but we know that tonight’s game is do or die for Slovakia who really need the victory and the three points,” said Martinez Losa. “We have been very satisfied with the work that we have been doing across this campaign and the challenge is just to keep it going.”
