Celtic have announced the departure of a fringe player less than 18 months after bringing him to Parkhead. 

Oh Hyeon-gyu cost the Scottish champions £2.5million in January 2023 - and Celtic scouts clearly saw enough potential to offer him a five-year contract.

But things just haven’t worked out in Glasgow since then. 

The 23-year-old showed little sign of displacing Kyogo Furuhashi or latterly, Adam Idah, as Brendan Rodgers’ preferred striker.

He scored 12 goals from 47 appearances and joins Belgian club, Genk, for £4.5million.

"Hyeon-gyu is a striker with a nose for goals who is not afraid to make dirty meters,” he explained. 

“He is a quick player who, thanks to his stature, also offers a strong presence in the box."

Speaking via Genk’s official website, Oh added: "KRC Genk is a team that has a lot of experience in training young players.

“When the interest became concrete, my choice was immediately clear. I can't wait to show myself.”

Last season, Oh featured a total of 26 times across all competitions, during which he found the back of the net on five occasions .

However, since the start of the new year, he had rarely been given any game time and moves on with Celtic’s best wishes.
